1. If you usually work out at lunch but a business meeting has kept you away from the gym, don't back out of going later. Leave yourself a voicemail at home to remind yourself that you still need to get in 30 minutes of exercise before collapsing in front of the TV.
2. Take a lesson. If golf or tennis is your game, treat yourself to an hour with a pro. You'll pick up some new pointers and improve your game.
3. Treat yourself to some new gear. Yoga class will be more fun if you do it in snazzy new outfit. When was the last time you bought new running shoes? Keep your motivation high by treating yourself to the right tools to help you reach your goals.
4. How about a new toy? Buy yourself a heart rate monitor or an odometer for your bike. If a new gadget will get you going, it's worth it.
5. If you're the type of person who loses steam as the day goes on, make yourself get up and exercise first thing in the morning. You'll know you've already accomplished a great workout and might even have increased energy to get you through your day.
6. Train for a special event. If the exercise alone doesn't excite you, try training for a charitable race or walk. Helping others (while you help yourself) is a great motivator.
7. Let the music move you. Try listening to upbeat tunes while you exercise. The tiny new MP3 players and iPods are easy to tote along as you hit the track or treadmill.
8. Variety is an important factor in staying motivated and an excellent way to get in shape and stay there. Cross-training fights boredom, uses a wider range of muscles and makes your workouts more fun.
9. Get a buddy! Variety helps here too. Walk with Kim, meet Janet at the gym, or sign up for a yoga class with Kathleen.
10. Get a pedometer! Wear it all day—you'll find new motivation to walk more. Try to beat your own daily distance.
