When you begin any new exercise plan, it's important to start slow and give your body a chance to get used to the new ways in which you are making demands on it. Then you can gradually increase your workouts for maximum benefit. If you walk, add in a few minutes of jogging. If you jog, try adding a few sprints to your routine. At the gym, try increasing the incline on the treadmill or adding a few extra minutes every few days. Do you prefer aerobics? Try mixing it up by taking a kick-boxing class one day and a step class the next. As with anything, variety is the key to keeping you interested, motivated and on top of your game.
It's also important to approach exercise with a bit of caution, especially if you've been out of a regular routine for a while. Remember to warm up with gentle stretching before you begin and cool down at the end of your workout. If it's been a while since you've really moved, choose something moderate to ease back into it. Ride your bike at the park before hitting a mountain bike trail or go for a hike before trying rock climbing. Injuries only set you back in your fitness goals, so get moving but move wisely.
The key is keeping up the good work. Endorphins and adrenaline will help with motivation, but if you're just not really into the workout thing, try these tricks until your body gets you hooked on the extra energy you'll have coming your way soon.
1. Schedule time at the gym like everything else. If you make the time, it will happen. Create a mini reward system–go straight from work and make it home in time to watch the new episode of Lost.
2. Do not deprive yourself of food. Workouts require fuel so be sure to eat balanced meals especially when you step it up during the final week.
3. Workout with a friend—someone you actually want to see. It'll get you to the gym. Bonus: Get some sort of overpriced smoothie afterwards and catch up on gossip.
4. Music is a huge motivator. So make a playlist on your iPod. Looking forward to the next song will keep you going.
5. Stock your gym bag with refreshing beauty products—so you can give yourself a treat and create an after–work out ritual you enjoy.
