1. Get in touch with your inner child—exercise can be fun. Try tossing a Frisbee with a friend or organize a weekend softball game with your co-workers.
2. Get moving! Make your body sweat with some serious activity. Walk fast (up a hill!) jog, ride a bike, jump on a treadmill—it really doesn't matter what you choose as long as you move!
3. Try something new. If you've always done aerobics or you're a diehard Pilates fan, swim for a change of pace. This low-impact activity can make you feel peaceful and serene while giving your heart, lungs and muscles a great workout.
4. Sleep tight. You'll increase your chances of staying on track with fitness and weight -loss goals if you're working off a decent night's sleep. Most people need at least eight hours, so figure out what you need to function at your best and try to get it every night.
5. Get out and enjoy nature. Go for a hike and explore the great outdoors. It's a fun way to exercise and take advantage of the warmer spring days.
6. Stretching is an important part of your fitness regime. Before and after a hard workout, gently stretch to avoid injury and reduce soreness.
7. Keep an activity log. If running is your thing, track how long you run and how far you go. Then try to increase your distance and/or shave off some time. Push yourself a little every few workouts and you'll see better results.
8. Be sure to rest. Muscles need a break now and then to rebuild and strengthen. Alternate the days of weight training and cardio to allow your body to recover, and every week be sure to take a couple of days off.
9. Weight training exercise is just as important as cardio. If you belong to a gym, make sure you use the weight machines a few days each week. At home, free weights can substitute for the machines. For long, lean, toned muscles, aim for more reps of lighter weight. To add bulk, try heavier weight and fewer reps. Always rest between sets.
